5 things you didn’t know about the clitoris

5 things you didn’t know about the clitoris

Ah, the wonderful, mysterious clitoris. The vulva’s pleasure centre - a treasure that many explorers find impossible to find (it’s literally right there in plain sight). While we are starting to learn more about this spongy tissue and the essential role it plays in sex and arousal, there’s more to the clit than meets the eye. Let us share with you a few lesser known facts about our fascinating little friend.

Fun over function

We often dryly refer to our entire genital area as ‘reproductive organs’, however in vaginas, and only vaginas, there is one part that is an exception to the rule. Yep, it’s our girl, the clitoris. There is absolutely no reproductive function to the clitoris, it exists purely for our pleasure. And we love that.

Big things come in small packages

We all know the clit, right? That tiny little bean poking its head through the opening of the clitoral glans. Well, actually, you’re only partially right. One quarter right, to be exact. The exposed part of the clitoris lives at the top of the vulva (where the inner labia meet), but there’s a whole other 75% inside your body that we can’t see. It’s much bigger than you think.

We ain’t nothing but mammals

There is truly not that much that separates us from the animal kingdom, and having a clitoris is no exception. Even without any reproductive need, all female mammals - from whales to mice - have a clitoris. That said, a blue whale’s clitoris can be up to three feet long, so there are still some size discrepancies between us.

Forever young

While the rest of our bodies slowly decline and lose their physical power, the clitoris simply will not quit. For the entirety of its life - even at its most mature, it's able to produce the same level of orgasmic strength. So, if you’re not having the mind-blowing orgasms you’d like to at this stage of your life, don’t stress, you might well have them in your 90s.

Sensitive is sexy

The penis has around 4,000 nerve endings - amazing right? Sure, but that’s childsplay related to the mighty clit. The average clitoris has around double - 8,000 highly sensitive nerve endings, which can spread across the whole pelvic area expanding to 15,000 other nerve endings.

With all of this in mind, and as the most highly sensitive erogenous zone there is, there is so much to celebrate about the clitoris. For those who have one, how will you show it your appreciation today? We have a few ideas.
